Phantom GI is developing PercStoma, a single-access device intended to create an ostomy through a needle under local anesthesia for patients who cannot undergo conventional surgery.
Phantom GI says conventional ostomy creation requires abdominal surgery and general anesthesia, leaving as many as 55,000 high-risk or frail U.S. patients a year without a surgical option, while care can cost up to $70,000 per case. Its $5 million seed round is funding PercStoma's development and first U.S. clinical studies, testing the company's bet that a roughly 20-minute, needle-based ostomy with simpler reversal can reduce intervention and expand access.
